Sounds Across Oceans acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land on which our events stand on, the Turrbal and Jagera peoples of Meanjin, and recognise their continuing connection to the land and waterways.
Oceans Art Orchestra (OAO) is a new intercultural ensemble born from the collective desire of a group of creative musicians to evolve a new kind of orchestral experience – one that provides an authentic platform for artists from diverse cultural backgrounds to experiment, improvise, and create new music together.
Bringing together musicians playing traditional Asian instruments, Western classical instruments, and contemporary voices, the orchestra generates soundscapes and themes through exploratory sonic play – blending ancient tonalities and textures with the sounds of traditional orchestral music. At times meditative and deeply contemplative, this music opens a space for stillness and reflection, connecting audiences to a sense of shared humanity and cultural harmony. Grounded in experimentation and live improvisation, the ensemble creates a platform where artists from all backgrounds can collaborate freely, a space where each cultural perspective is valued and new music can flow spontaneously.

The ensemble emerged through collaborative relationships born through the intersection of BrisAsia Festival, the community music work of Sounds Across Oceans, and The University of Queensland School of Music. Instigated by guitarist/composer Dr Anthony Garcia – the orchestra brings together nine musicians across a remarkable breadth of traditions: Anna Chen (Erhu), Nicole Yang (Guqin), Dr Takako Haggarty (Koto), Zi Wang (Voice), Holly Zhang (Percussion), Justin Bullock (Double Bass), Dr Ian O’Brien (French Horn), Gabriel Garcia (Trumpet) and Dr Anthony Garcia (Guitars). Conceived as an organic living ensemble, OAO will grow over time through community engagement and youth mentorship – continuously drawing new voices and cultural perspectives into its creative life.
Debut
OAO made its debut in February 2026 at BrisAsia Stories at ABC Studios South Bank. Currently, the ensemble is focused on developing new repertoire, refining its improvisational and compositional language, and building the community and creative partnerships needed to champion musical and cultural diversity through innovative intercultural workshops, performances, sound installations, and collaborations with artists across dance and visual art.
